I've been thinking about which requirements I'll need before being able to go pro, and I have also paid some thought on my weaknesses as a pokerplayer. Lets start out with the requirements first!
Lets imagine for a moment that I want to move to London and live as a professional pokerplayer. This seems to be a pretty cool ambition, so lets stick to it - let it be my beacon for now! Well, in order to survive, I'll be needing a monthly income of apprx 1,500 GBP - thats in the neighbourhood of $3,000. And thats EVERY SINGLE MONTH!! That sounds pretty impressive, until its slized down to 50 GBP per day. Now, thats more like it - and not at all unachievable. I'm pretty sure I can get there, but I need to improve a few things first.
In the past, I've generally been a decisive winner at cashgames, wheras tournaments has been more... so-so for me. I've also had a tendency to move up to higher levels at a time when my bankroll couldn't sustain the blows which are unavoidable at ANY level.
SO, my challenges should, ultimately, help me
1. boost my bankroll to a professional level
2. implement the concept of making a certain amount of money every month from poker.
3. Implement the necessary discipline, so that I won't go off throwing my bankroll away on tournamentplay or playing over my bankroll.
4. learn to play live and to become a winning live-player as well.
This is what I need to do. And ofcourse, along the way I'll be studying Harrington's books on cashgames as well as others, in order to learn a few more tricks.
But its also important that I continue living my life as it is. There must ALWAYS be more to life than poker. I will go to work, do whatever I like to do in my spare time (non-poker related!) and go on vacations whenever I can. I will boost my poker to a professional level, but it cannot be allowed to swallow up my entire life!
So, this is the framework within which these challenges will be operating. Am I making sense so far?
Ok, so the goal for my June-challenge is this: To strenghten my discipline with regards to playing at a designated bankroll level, control my 'desire' to play tournaments with bad value AND to help me foster a deeper understanding of the need to make small daily profits, in order to achieve the higher end.
So, her it goes:
On FullTilt, my challenge is to play every day and to make a daily avarage profit of $10 playing only NL25-tables.
Rules for tournamentplay
On FullTilt, I will be allowed to sign up for token-qualifiers provided that my avarage profit leaves room for it. Example: after five days of playing, my profit should be at least $50. The price of a tokentournament is $8.80, so if my profit is at $58.80 or more - then I can play one. And ofcourse, if I win a token, I'm free to use it. The value of such a token or other profits thereof will be excluded from the challenge. This challenge is about cashgames and discipline, not tournamentplay!
I'd like to explain the purpose of playing NL25-tables and my purpose of keeping such a low ambition with regards to profits. As most of you would know, I'm a winning NL50-player, so why move down for the challenge? Well, its about discipline. Since one of my problems has been playing over my bankroll at higher stakes, I have found it necessary to implement more discipline in my tableselection. And I firmly believe that playing for a month or more below my normal blind-level, will help me foster the discipline needed. With regards to the profitmargin.. well, over 25 pokerplaying days it should provide me with a profit of $250 on FullTilt. At my present level, thats a nice bankroll-boost - and besides, I encourage you to study point two on the list above :)
And, just to clear off one thing, the challenge says that I will be playing a little every day. This is true, though I'll be in London for five days and will not be playing online during this period. Instead, I will give myself a challenge for live play at the Victoria Grosvenor Casino - but more about that later ;)
